A.M.O.K. Running A.M.O.K.:
Using the Arts in Ministry

I guess the best way to introduce this column is to tell you a bit about the ministry and the goals behind it. A.M.O.K. is an acronym for Arts Ministry Outreach for the Kingdom. It is a ministry dedicated to helping people in ministry use the arts in outreach and worship. The guiding verse for A.M.O.K. is 1Peter 4:10. "Each one should use whatever gifts he has been given to serve others." The mission of A.M.O.K. is threefold:

* To equip people to share the gospel through the arts
* To support creative ministries through prayer, resources and ideas
* To reach the lost through participation in the arts

In this column, we will explore new and different uses for the arts in ministry. You will find visual arts ideas, ways to challenge people with gifts in writing, original skits, unique uses for music, and more. You will also find articles telling about ways that others are using the arts in ministry as a way to inspire and challenge you and resources that I have found to be useful. If you have a new and unique use for the arts in ministry, questions on using the arts in ministry or a need for a specific project please feel free to contact me at angelprty1@aol.com. This column is here to help.

The arts impact the lives of practically everyone. We are surrounded by music, visual images are used to sell products and services, people pay billions of dollars a year to see movies and so on. The devil figured this out a long time ago and he is using the arts very well. The church, with the exception of music has yet to master this concept. We need to remember who we are. We are the children of the ultimate Creator. Creativity runs through our veins, but we need to tap into it. The church needs to move away from the "protesting against the media" mentality and start to have "create better art to the glory of God" mentality. Using the arts as a tool, with God's help, we can reach this generation. We just have to (here comes the cliche) think outside the box. If we go on the offensive with the arts, and we use our gifts and we stay rooted in the Word of God, I believe we will see an amazing move of God.

People approach the arts in many different ways. Some people feel very confident about their artistic abilities while others feel they have no talent at all. Part of the goal of using the arts in ministry is to help people to find their gift. A person who is introverted and would never think about getting on a stage may be a wonderful writer. A person who thinks they can do nothing beyond drawing stick figures may really shine creating collages. Some express themselves in drama or in song or dance or any one of an infinite number of ways as they have been gifted by God. We have to help people to see their talents as gifts from God, to be used to his glory. Join in this new adventure as we seek to Run A.M.O.K. with the Gospel. Big things are coming!
